Portfolio:    Post your Subtext Scenes by Sunday night at 8pm.  Please remember to make sure that they are grammatically correct.

***There will be a group quiz at the beginning of next week.  I expect each group member to be prepared.  Here are some guiding questions for you based on the three short stories from the end of Chapter 3:
Look carefully at how each author incorporated the Direct Methods of Characterization.

"Gryphon"
: Read 'Gryphon' by Charles Baxter on pages 99-110 and answer the following questions:
• What details describing Miss Ferenczi show us why the narrator is drawn to her? How does he change in response to her lessons?
• "Bobby Kryzanowicz, the faultless brown-noser," is an example of a "flat" character. How do details and dialogue create this effect?
• What is the story's crisis? What action does the narrator take there and why?

"Every Tongue Shall Confess"
Read "Every Tongue Shall Confess" by ZZ Packer on pages 110-120 and answer the following questions:
• What elements of Appearance are used to characterize the characters in the story?
• How does the dialogue help characterize the characters in the story? Pick 3 examples that show this.

"Rock Springs"
Read "Rock Springs" by Richard Ford on pages 120-134 and answer the following questions:
• Find an example of summary dialogue and list it.
• What are 2 examples of subtext for Edna and Earl. What do you think they would really be saying, instead of what they actually say?
• What do you think about the format of the ending?
